Facebook is dead. Long live Facebook.

OK, I've given it the old college try - twice now. I listened to the advice of a few friends and set up my blog to auto-import as Facebook notes, and kept my account open. I de-friended a bunch of people that I don't think I've ever met.

And still, I don't feel like Facebook is contributing anything positive to my life. In fact, there are some good reasons for me to abandon it altogether. Here are some, in no particular order:
  • I don't really have 371 friends.
  • Even if I did have 371 friends, I don't think I would want them ALL to know "what I'm doing right now."
  • I'm tired of feeling inferior to Quincy Lima, who has over 1,000 friends.
  • I'm tired of trying to compose witty status updates.
  • I'm spending too much time reading other people's witty status updates
  • Cooper Smith has a new baby AND a new camera. I can't cope with all the pictures.
  • I'm tired of getting hit with stuff my "friends" throw at me.
  • I'm tired of getting poked and super-poked. It hurts. Besides, what are we, 12?
  • I find virtual gifts somewhat less than meaningful.
  • The abbreviations really get on my nerves. Facebook rarely makes me Laugh Out Loud, and never while Rolling On the Floor. I'm not Just Kidding.
  • Facebook is the single largest productivity killer ever to entice me away from more important things.
So, to all my Facebook friends: at whatever level I am really your friend, I heartily continue to be so. To my relatives - don't disown me, ok? To my missionary brothers and sisters - I'll miss you the most - keep me on your newsletter lists, and I'll still pray for you. But from now on I really need to reallocate my Facebook time to pursuits of more lasting significance. Please stop by here and comment on a post, or email me.

p.s. If you choose to stay on Facebook, that's totally fine with me. I won't think less of you as you're wasting the time I'm no longer wasting. lol, jk.

FWIW, I never have, nor ever will, allow applications to access my profile (IOW, I automatically ignore any snowball, ornament, invitation, gift, and all other virtual "reach out and touch" offers).

I "only" have 233 friends. Almost all I know personally, in one way or another. That, in itself, is amazing. And entertaining.

Lastly, I've learned the art of ignoring, setting aside, prioritizing, and some times not even opening Facebook.

HSAT (oops, there's another one of those pesky abbreviations!), I can understand why one would want to spend one's time in a more productive way. So . . . see you around, Andy, in person, even!

Sigh - reconnected after years only to have to stalk, er uh, follow you to another site. Here's looking forward to your musings! Go Stillers...

Though it is sad you're leaving, I understand your reasons, as you have outlined above... some which are quite witty if I might add.

Amusing. Understandable. But you'll be missed nonetheless!

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'm touched that 6 of my 371 friends made the effort. HA! You know, since I posted this I've found that it's really easy to guilt-trip people on this topic...
